‘Year of the Tiger’ was inspired by the 2022 Chinese New Year, I was intrigued by the meaning behind the animals that represent each year and wanted to explore the Chinese Zodiacs through a unique and culturally relevant medium like printmaking. In each print, I included symbols and patterns that were in some way relevant to the individual animal or to Chinese culture. These include things images like bamboo: symbol of luck, blossoms: symbol of courage, peonies: symbol of peace, lanterns: symbol of success, kumquats: symbol of prosperity and other patterns and shapes that would fit the theme of each animal’s print. I also included the traditional Chinese characters for the name of each animal in the corner of each print to further represent Chinese culture and to make the image more engaging for viewers. I also chose to incorporate chine-colle, coloured collage into different parts of each print, to bring out the intricacy and detail in the print, as well as highlight the centre of the print being the animal.
