VANITY

YEAR 10 Installation and YEAR 11 sculpture making Collaboration

Blue Mountains Grammar School

My artwork ‘Vanity’ is a self-reflective sculpture, representing personal struggles with my appearance and how I would compare myself to women I saw in magazines and the media. In early 2020 I made the decision to chop off all my hair in the pursuit of self-expression, which began as a great and freeing decision, but eventually this led to the creation of insecurity. This era of my life is represented through the plaster sculpture.

The sculpture is a self-portrait body cast, creating a perfect mould of my head and shoulders.
There is a stark contrast between the plain white appearance of the sculpture and the addition of the installation. This sculpture explores the juxtaposition between the traditional feminine version of myself and a more modern version (interpretation) of femininity.
